Commission Art

LOCATION: Altamonte Springs, FL

STYLE: Oil on canvas

My interest in art started while attending college in Denver , Colorado .  The field of art was confined to collecting the work of local artists.  The first piece I ever purchased was from a small gallery in Laramier Square . I was visiting a silversmith friend of mine who worked in the area.  After lunch we walked the Square taking in the local color. My eye was drawn to a small paper, ink and watercolor entitled Milecent's Kite. I paid $75 for the piece in 1973.  I continued to collect work for the next ten years.

I became involved with painting through an artist friend who had a studio at the old MacRae Street Warehouse. I spent many hours in the building watching my friend paint large abstract work. My initial role was to build the stretchers and stretch the canvas.  Eventually, I moved from the menial task to attempting to paint a piece of my own.  The first piece  remains in my Altamonte Springs home.  It consists of lines, threads intersecting, intertwining and revealing the openness that rests behind the work.  At the time, my creative outlet was cross-stitching samplers.  Looking at my first painting today, I realize that I had done in oil, what I had been doing in thread for a number of years.
